Shopify · Upsell & cross-sell

Which apps AI answers name when Shopify merchants ask for an upsell app.

And where those names come from. 15 questions a merchant would actually type, run through retrieval-based AI answers, with every cited page written down: 102 citations across 58 domains, naming 31 distinct products.

15buyer questions, run once each
102citations recorded, one row per question and source
58distinct source domains, each traced to its owner
31distinct products named across all answers

Method

How to reproduce every number here.

Nothing on this page is modelled or estimated. Each figure is a count over one table, and the table has one row per pair of question and cited source.

  • 15 questions, written the way a merchant types rather than the way a keyword tool suggests, in three shapes: problem first, with a constraint, and head to head.
  • Run 2026-08-25, one clean session per question, no follow-ups, no personalisation carried between them.
  • Retrieval-based answers only. Every answer here ran a live web search and cited pages. That is what is measured: which pages the search surfaced and what they said.
  • Recorded as 102 rows — 5 to 8 cited sources per question, 6.8 on average. Product names and domains are transcribed exactly as returned.
  • Owner assigned to every domain by opening it: who publishes it, and whether they sell a product in this category, next to it, or not at all.

What this does and does not measure

This is search-grounded answering, not the model's memory.

When an assistant searches the web before answering, its names come from the pages it just read — so this report is really a measurement of those pages. Answers produced from a model's own training data alone are a different surface, they move far more slowly, and nothing here should be read as describing them.

One run per question, one category, one platform, one date. Retrieval results shift week to week; treat every number as a snapshot of 2026-08-25, reproducible by asking the same 15 questions again and writing down what comes back.

The questions

15 questions, three shapes.

A merchant rarely types a category name. They describe a store, a constraint or a shortlist they already have — and each shape pulls a different set of pages.

Problem first · 5 of 15

The merchant describes a situation, not a product category.

  • how do I increase average order value on Shopify7 sources · 2 products named
  • how to add a bundle offer on Shopify without coding8 sources · 2 products named
  • how to show related products at checkout on Shopify6 sources · 1 product named
  • my upsell app is slowing down my store, what should I use instead8 sources · 6 products named
  • how to do post purchase upsells without hurting conversion6 sources · 0 products named

With a constraint · 6 of 15

The merchant adds a limit — size, plan, price point, device.

  • best Shopify upsell app for a small store8 sources · 7 products named
  • upsell app for a Shopify store doing 100 orders a month7 sources · 4 products named
  • best upsell app for a one product Shopify store7 sources · 4 products named
  • Shopify upsell app for high ticket products6 sources · 6 products named
  • best upsell app for Shopify Plus7 sources · 3 products named
  • Shopify upsell app that works well on mobile5 sources · 4 products named

Head to head · 4 of 15

The merchant already has names and wants them weighed.

  • ReConvert vs Zipify OneClickUpsell8 sources · 2 products named
  • Rebuy vs ReConvert5 sources · 2 products named
  • Selleasy vs Frequently Bought Together7 sources · 2 products named
  • best alternative to Bold Upsell7 sources · 5 products named

14 of the 15 answers named at least one product by name. 1 answered with technique rather than product names, and named none.

Products named

31 products were named. The most frequent appears in 7 of the 15.

Ranked by how many of the 15 answers name the product at all, regardless of the order it appears in. After the first two — 7 and 5 questions — the tail flattens fast: 21 of the 31 products were named for exactly one question.

Products by number of questions naming them, out of 15.

Where the answers read

58 domains, each traced to whoever publishes it.

Every source cited across the 15 answers, ranked by how many times it was cited. The owner column is the company behind the domain; the type says what that company sells relative to this category. Amber marks a domain owned by an app competing in the category being asked about.

All 58 cited domains, 102 citations total. Cites is the number of answers that cited that domain.

Who owns the sources

52 of 102 citations point at a page published by a competing app.

That is 51% of everything the answers read in this category, spread across 24 of the 58 domains. It is a measurement, not an accusation: writing a "best apps" list that includes your own app is ordinary content marketing, and it long predates AI answers. What is new is that a retrieval-based answer treats that page as a source and passes its shortlist along.

Citations grouped by what the domain's owner sells. Groups are exclusive; 102 citations and 58 domains in total.

Communities and forums32.9%3

Three things the breakdown says plainly.

  • Every one of the 15 questions drew on at least one page published by an app in the category. There was no question where the answer read only neutral sources.
  • Official Shopify pages accounted for 9 citations across 3 domains, appearing in 9 of the 15 answers — present, but a minority of what was read.
  • Independent editorial — blogs, review sites and industry writing with nothing to sell here — accounted for 11 of 102 citations. The thin part of the picture is not vendor content; it is everything else.

Reading it

The answer is downstream of the page.

In this category, a retrieval-based answer is close to a summary of the 5 to 8 pages the search returned. That explains most of what the tables show: a product named on many of those pages is named in many answers, and a product on none of them has no route into the answer at all — however old it is, however many merchants use it, however it is rated, unless a page the answer reads says so.

It also explains why a shortlist can turn over quickly. Nothing here is a ranking of quality, and nothing here is stable: change the pages, and the same 15 questions return a different list.

The same 15-question method, run free for your own category and written up like this: Namedin.
